Ken Basil was elected Superintendent of Education for the Union County School District and took office in January 2008 and is serving in his second term. Basil graduated from Myrtle School in 1979, earned his Bachelor in Education from Mississippi State University in 1984, and his Master of Educational Leadership Degree in 2000 from MSU. Basil began his teaching/coaching career in 1984 for the Starkville Public School District for 6 years. In 1991 he returned to Union County to live and he taught 2 years at Blue Mountain School. In 1993 Basil was hired by Union County School District to serve as teacher and coach at West Union School. He then was hired as Assistant Principal for Union County School District where he served two years at East Union School and then one year at Myrtle School. In 2004, he took the Principal position at Potts Camp and 3 ½ years later he was elected as Superintendent of Union County Schools.
Ken is married to Christi Goolsby Basil and they have two children. Tyler Basil is a graduate of New Albany High School and is currently enrolled at Mississippi State University. Hayden is a junior at West Union Attendance Center. Basil serves on the board at Northeast Mississippi Community College, he is the chairman of the RESA organization, he serves on the Executive Committee for Mississippi Professional Educators, and also the chairman of the Northeast Mississippi Education Consortium group. Ken and his family attend Macedonia Baptist Church.
